Why Nano Pieces Fall Out — and How to Fix It
Losing a few nano pieces between maintenance appointments is normal.
If a client loses around five pieces over several weeks, I usually would not be concerned.
But if they are losing 10 or more, or the same problem keeps happening repeatedly, it is time to figure out why.
The easiest place to start is by looking at what actually came out.
Extension + Bead Slide Out Together
This usually means the bead did not have enough grip on the client’s natural hair.
Bead Stays, Extension Pulls Out
This usually means the nano tip was not fully seated inside the bead.
Bead + Tip Stay, Bond Breaks Down
This points more toward extension age, moisture or breakdown of the bond itself.
1. The Extension and Bead Slide Out Together
If the extension and bead come out together, the problem is usually grip.
Common causes include:
- oil or conditioner close to the roots
- very soft or slippery natural hair
- not enough natural hair inside the bead
- the bead not being clamped firmly enough
One of the best ways to reduce this type of fallout is to make sure the client arrives with clean, freshly washed, completely dry hair and no oils or heavy products around the root area.
If your client regularly arrives with buildup, consider offering a clarifying wash before installation or recommending a clarifying shampoo for home use.
2. The Bead Is Still in the Hair, but the Nano Extension Is Gone
This tells you something completely different.
If the bead is still securely attached to the client’s natural hair, but the nano extension has pulled out, the problem was not the bead slipping.
The nano tip was most likely not fully inserted into the bead during installation.
This is an installation issue and something to watch carefully while working.
Before clamping the bead, make sure the nano tip is completely seated inside it.
3. The Bead and Metal Tip Are Still There, but the Bond Has Broken Down
If the bead is still attached and the metal nano tip is still inside it, but the extension hair or bond has disintegrated, the issue is usually different again.
This can happen when:
- the extensions are getting old
- the client regularly sleeps with wet hair
- the bonds are not being dried properly after washing
- harsh products are repeatedly used near the bond
Over time, repeated moisture and wear can weaken the bond.
If this is happening, review the age of the hair and the client’s home-care routine before assuming the installation itself was the problem.
Do not treat every piece of fallout the same.
Look at what came out first. That will usually tell you whether you are dealing with slippage, an installation issue or bond breakdown.
Use Maintenance Appointments to Troubleshoot
Maintenance is one of the best opportunities to find out what is actually happening between appointments.
If a client is experiencing more fallout than expected, ask about:
- how they are brushing their extensions
- what brush they are using
- what shampoo and conditioner they are using
- whether oils or conditioner are being applied near the bonds
- whether they completely dry the bonds after washing
- whether they ever go to bed with wet hair
- how long it has been since their last maintenance appointment
Sometimes the solution is technical.
Sometimes it is home care.
And sometimes the client simply needs the right brush, better products or a clearer aftercare routine.
The Goal Is Not Zero Fallout
A few lost nano pieces over a full wear cycle is normal.
The goal is not to promise that a client will never lose an extension.
The goal is to recognize when the amount of fallout is outside the normal range and know how to troubleshoot it.
If the bead and extension slide out together, look at grip.
If the bead remains but the extension comes out, look at how the nano tip was inserted.
If the bead and metal tip remain but the bond breaks down, look at the age of the hair and the client’s aftercare.
Once you learn to identify the difference, troubleshooting nano fallout becomes much easier.
