Tips for Hair Extensions in Short Hair

Posted by Hair Flair on 7th Jan 2015

So you got a new haircut and you hate it, or you're trying to grow out that bob? Hair extensions can help you turn that horrible cut into a look you love, all while letting your natural hair grow back. Poorly applied hair extensions, however, can give you that dreaded “mullet look,” so here are a few tips to make sure that your transformation will be what you wanted.

1. Choose the proper hair extension method

Clip-ins are often a popular choice but are very difficult to hide in short hair. Plus you have to constantly put them in on a daily basis. Our recommendation is to use a small strand-by-strand method that can be placed all over the head and are virtually undetectable. Nano link extensions are often turned to because they have extreme versatility in placement and they are so small that no one will be able to see them.

2. Use A LOT of hair

Covering short hair is one of the most difficult things to do with extensions, so make sure that you are using at least 125 to 150 grams of hair. A “traditional” full head is often referred to as 100 grams, so ask your stylist about purchasing a couple extra bundles to make sure you have enough hair.

3. Get it cut

You need to have the extensions properly cut and layered so that they look natural. Do not go from 3 inch hair to 20 inch hair and leave them that long. This is the number one mistake that women make.

4. Style it properly

Having extensions in short hair requires styling. Talk to your stylist about how to curl and straighten extensions, and how they blend best with your natural hair.
